ABOUT THE MAKER

David Shapiro (American, b.1944) was born in Brooklyn, NY. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 1966, and his MFA from Indiana University in 1968. Shapiro’s Abstract compositions of paintings and mixed media are made up of color, form, and texture; these pieces provoke meditative consciousness and tranquility. He uses diverse textures, such as Nepalese, Japanese paper, burlap, nylon screening, and canvas. Shapiro’s work is influenced by Eastern traditions such as Buddhist hand symbols and yoga practices, which materialize in his work in forms such as circles, spirals, waves, and flames. Shapiro has exhibited internationally, and his works are included in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, OH, and the Kunsthalle der Stadt in Nuremberg, Germany. The artist is represented by the Nicholas Metivier Gallery in Toronto, CA, and the Bill Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, GA.
